Granite Hill Vineyards is an established grower operation located 16 miles north of Fredericksburg, TX in a small appellation know as the Bell Mountain AVA. The well-drained Cambrian Hickory Sands soils and the micro-climate at around 2,000 ft. with cool nights provide excellent terroir for the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon varieties. Commanding premium prices for grapes, Granite Hill Vineyards is positioned to provide top winemakers in Frederickburg with quality grapes for years to come. 33 planted acres of Texas soil have been lovingly planted starting with 22 ac.-Merlot in 1997 followed by blocks of 7 ac.-Cabernet Sauvignon in 1998 and 4 ac.-Malbec in 1999 all on SO2 rootstock.

Steve and Joy Johnson have become respected members and contributed much to the Texas Wine Growers Network over the years. A labor of love, the couple carefully planned the 104 acre site considering slope, row orientation, trellis construction, irrigation wells, harvest and future growth. The time has come for the Johnsons to transfer this opportunity to an upstarting or relocating vintner wanting to jump into a turnkey operation. ABOUT GRANITE HILL VINEYARDS

"With a European background where many families had their own vineyard and made their own wine, Steve had long wanted to start his own vineyard. We began looking for a site in 1993. Our primary focus was on soil but there was always the pull of family in Houston that kept our site goal to be in driving distance of Houston. We started going west from Houston, searching properties on the weekends, taking soil samples and sending them to the A&M lab for analysis. We studied to learn the best site parameters and read publications on vineyard site selection and installation. After looking at properties in Bastrop, Austin, and Kerrville and Fredericksburg, we settled on approximately 104 acres just north of Fredericksburg. Located about 5 miles as the crow flies from Enchanted Rock which is the second largest exfoliated granite dome in the U.S., the valley for our future vineyard was formed during the same Llano uplift that formed Enchanted Rock eons ago. That geological event brought up ancient hickory soils to the surface in the present site, very different from soils as close as a mile away. The Granite Hill Vineyard site is in the Bell Mountain Viticultural Appellation, a 15 square mile area within the Texas Hill Country appellation with very specific soil and elevation that give it a very special terroir. Over the next year we cleared the approximate 50 acres of vineyard site, had it deep root plowed, built a 4000 sq. ft. building with a small apartment to house the needed equipment. In 1996 we planted a one half acre vineyard with several varieties of grapes which, because of Steve’s engineering background, became known as the “prototype” vineyard. This proved to be of enormous value in determining the appropriate varieties to plant in the commercial vineyard. Today our grapes are used in the production of reserve wines of Texas wineries and are featured in select wines in high end restaurants as far away as New York City." - Steve & Joy Johnson, Proprietors Granite Hill Vineyards
